Crosslinked polyethylene

The crosslinked polyethylene, known by its initials as PEX or XLPE, is one of the different types of crosslinked polyethilene that exists. . It is used to make pipes and hoses, and is highly used in the construction of radiant heating systems that use water, domestic water pipes and insulation for electric power lines. It is also used for systems that handle natural gas and offshore oil, chemical transport, and transport of sewage and drainage. Furthermore, it has become an alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) or copper tube pipes for household water systems. PEX pipes are manufactured in a number of measures ranging from 1/4-inch to 32 -inch diameter pipes but 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch and 1-inch are those used most frequently in the real state industry whilst in the mining industry are used from 4 “to 32” diameter for water transport, transport of abrasive fluids and corrosive fluids. In international units PEX pipes are manufactured in the following diameters: 16 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 63 mm, 75 mm, 90 mm and 110 mm.

POLYETHYLENE PIPE

Crosslinked Polyethylene pipes PIPEX are manufactured by the peroxide method , ranking within the PEX -A group. This gives greater resistance to high pressures and temperatures that most pipes PEX in the market , increasing the quality and durability of the system.

Crosslinked Polyethylene pipes PIPEX are manufactured according to the  UNE -EN ISO 15875 , common to all European countries . All PEX -A pipes are Certified by leading European Quality institutes ( AENOR , SKZ , CSTB , IIP) .

Crosslinked Polyethylene pipes PIPEX are manufactured by the peroxide method , ranking within the PEX -A group. This results in a better endurance to high pressures and temperatures than most  PEX pipes in the market , thereby increasing the quality and durability of the system.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The technology used to produce PIPEX pipes obtains crosslinking degrees higher than 80% during the same manufacturing process of the tube, without further treatment with steam or hot water being required. Furthermore, this process is the only guarantee of an excellent crosslinking uniformity at all points of the tube ( same degree of crosslinking ) with a maximum difference of 0.5%.

The crosslinking turns the original, thermoplastic polyethylene ( you can melt and cast several times ), into a thermoset material ( can not be melted again) . This process provides PIPEX tubes excellent  properties:

• Increased tensile strength .
• Increased resistance to cracking .
• Improved resistance to breaks by pressure on tubes, both on short and long term periods of    time .
• Lowering the elongation created by breaks .
• Improved stability properties under high temperatures :
• Improved dimensional stability.
• Increased pressure resistance in hot water pipes .
• Resistance to chemical attack by solvents, oils, and water, without fouling , corrosion or aging occurring.
• Impact resistance , being very flexible , light and electrically non-conductive .

> The PIPEX tube meets the sanitary regulations of the main European countries for use in drinking water. Also contains no substances that could affect the organoleptic properties of water.

> These properties characterize PIPEX as the ideal driving pipe for applications in hot water ( heating pipes , floor heating or hot water for sanitary use ) or conduction of corrosive fluids.

> Crosslinked polyethylene pipes PIPEX are manufactured according to the UNE -EN ISO 15875 , common to all European countries. All PEX -A pipes are certified by the main Institutes (AENOR , SKZ , CSTB , IIP) .

ADVANTAGES OF PIPES PIPEX

•   Ease of Installation . No welding or machining is required. The system of accessories -fittings offers simplicity and economic profit.
•   Flexibility. PEX- tubes A ( peroxide ) flexibility is higher than the crosslinked PEX pipes from other systems. They can be bent in cold and folded very simply and without special tools , and saving installation time.
•   Resistant to high temperatures. Can be used at temperatures up to 95 ° C and even 110 ° C for some hours.
•   Withstanding high pressures. At higher crosslinking levels, higher pressure resistance . This property confers a lifetime that exceeds 50 years of installation.
•   Corrosion resistant . Suitable for conducting corrosive fluids.
•   Minimum losses. The roughness of the inner walls of PIPEX tubes , is much lower than the one in metallic pipes . This reduces the energy needed to pump water through the installation, thus enabling pipes with equal diameters to carry more water flow inside.
•   No fouling. Avoids obstructions and ensures low pressure drops throughout the life of the installation..
•   Resistant to abrasion.
•   Lightweight . Weighs 7 times less than Copper tubes and 13 times less than steel tubes for equivalent diameters.
•   Optimas hygienic – sanitary conditions . Does not alter the organoleptic characteristics of drinking water.
•   Insulation. Low coefficient of thermal conductivity providing energy savings by reducing heat loss .
•   Resistant to frost Prevents condensation and the possibility of water freezing is reduced.
•   Electrical insulator. Eliminates any galvanic corrosion.
•   No noise transmitted Its flexibility greatly reduces the transmission of acoustic impacts even at the highest water flow speeds.
•   Suitable for seismic zones Because of their elasticity and flexibility, they can absorb greater stresses than metallic pipes .
•   Thermal memory . PIPEX pipes recover their original shape when hot air is applied to them. Corrects errors on installation and it is easier to repair.

QUALITY CONTROL

All production of crosslinked polyethylene pipes PIPEX are subjected to continuous testing and quality controls which ensure that the product sold is right. Agrometzer SA has a laboratory equipped with the latest quality controlled equipment to perform all the required tests to the pipe:

>   Sizing. (outer diameter , inner diameter , wall thickness) . Double Control : Continuously on the production line and again on the product already manufactured . UNE -EN ISO 3126.
>   Degree of crosslinking. According to the standard UNE- 579 .
>   Behavior to heat.( Longitudinal Shrinkage ) . According to ISO 2505 .

>   Resistance to internal pressure . According to UNE-EN ISO 1167 rule.
>  Induction time to oxidation. According to UNE-EN 728 rule. Although this test is not included in the rules of PEX tubing it is used to determine the level of thermal stabilization of the tube.
>   Carbon black content. (Black tubes). According to ISO 6964.
>   Elongation at break. According to ISO 6259.

CAUTIONS

• Place the tube in its original packaging avoiding exposure to direct sunlight that can damage the quality of the tube.
• Store the tube in a covered, dry place.
• Avoid contact with hard pipes and cutting materials that can cause damage, both during installation and transport.
• The bend radius of the installation must be 5 times the nominal diameter of the pipe if done in cold while using a pipe bending machine. This radius may be lower if the bending becomes hot (use an air heater and never a direct flame).
• Do not apply  direct flames to the tube that could melt it.
• Use plastic to secure the tubes (brackets / rails) and don’t use metallic materials that could damage the tube (wires).
• Do not use chemical solvents during the installation of the tube.
• After installing the pipe it is essential to perform a load test on the installation as explained in the UNE-ENV 12108 so that they can evidence whether there are fluid losses caused by bad connections or damaged material.

PEX PIPE -A  anti-oxygen barrier – EVOH

PIPEX pipes – EVOH are manufactured according to UNE -EN ISO 15875. They are crosslinked polyethylene pipes according to PEROXIDE (PEX -A ) method with oxygen barrier antidiffusion ( EVAL system) depending on the requirements of the European standard EN 1264- 4 .
The barrier EVOH oxygen antidiffusion is a thin layer of ethyl vinyl alcohol copolymer that prevents the permeability of the tube to the diffusion of oxygen, eliminating the problem of oxigene contribution to the water flow and corrosion on metal fixtures, extending the life of the entire installation.
The PIPEX – EVOH tubes meet the highest quality requirements and are certified with the AENOR product.
PIPEX – EVOH pipes combine the advantages of peroxide – PEX pipes (excellent temperature resistance to higher pressures, crosslinking uniformity and superior flexibility , … ) with the anti-diffusion barrier properties of the EVOH . Therefore:
• The tubes with PIPEX -EVOH barrier have the same resistance to temperature, pressure resistance and warranty than PEX tubes without barrier .
• They offer reduced permeability to oxygen.
• PIPEX – EVOH tubes require the same accessories – fittings than PEX pipes with no barrier .
• Thermal memory in PIPEX – EVOH tubes equals the one in PIPEX tubes .

PIPEX – EVOH tubes can also be used for sanitary and heating installations, for both certified according to UNE -EN ISO 15875 , reaching temperatures of 95ºC and even 110 ° C for short periods of time.
